Ecker Issues Statement on Wolf Recommendation to Halt Fall Sports
ABBOTTSTOWN – Earlier today, Gov. Tom Wolf stated his “recommendation is that we don’t do any sports until Jan. 1.” In response, Rep. Torren Ecker (R-Adams/Cumberland) issued the following the statement:
“What a shame for the thousands of high school seniors and their families. Keeping people safe is important; however, the governor’s own rules allow outdoor gatherings every day. I guess the rules are different when it is inside the gates of a high school stadium. This is yet another example of the governor’s double standard and moving the goalposts, much like what we have seen the past few months.
“Extracurricular activities, including sports, are intricate to students’ lives. High school sports programs increase the health and wellness of student athletes, teach them leadership skills, and help improve academic success. This will all be lost under Gov. Wolf’s unilateral recommendation to not allow fall sports to be played.
“Wolf’s recommendation came after he repeatedly said any decisions about reopening schools must be made at the local level – with school districts. This was a reasonable and responsible approach. As we have seen since the start, this virus is impacting various parts of the state very differently.
“Also troubling was that the governor provided his latest guidance at the end of the press briefing, which was promptly ended, and did not allow the media to ask follow up questions. This is yet another example of the governor giving his recommendation but not allowing himself to be held accountable.”
