Liability Protections Legislation Moves to Governor’s Desk, Says Ecker

HARRISBURG ¬– The House earlier today approved amended legislation that provides businesses, schools, nursing homes and others with protections from frivolous lawsuits stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. House Bill 1737 now goes to the governor for his signature.

In response, Rep. Torren Ecker (R-Adams/Cumberland), who sponsored a similar bill to offer commonsense protections via limited liability to the critical suppliers, health care providers and employers operating during the pandemic, issued the following statement:

“I was proud to join my colleagues this afternoon in sending House Bill 1737 to the governor’s desk. This bill provides an opportunity to help our health care providers, schools, business owners, farmers, and restaurants by allowing good actors to operate safely without fear of frivolous lawsuits.

“This legislation allows these organizations to continue supporting our community throughout the pandemic without threat of legal battles and court costs that well-intentioned businesses just cannot afford. This bill does not protect those who are putting our children, workers and community at risk, and anybody who exhibits gross negligence can and should be held accountable.

“Now more than ever, our educators and small business community need our continued support. I urge Gov. Wolf to sign House Bill 1737 and provide much needed protections to these vital organizations.”
